Vino della settimana 1999 L’Insieme Elio Altare

Enjoy wine and contribute to a needy cause at the same time?  Yes, by buying a bottle (or more) of the Vino Rosso L’Insieme from any of 8 winemakers in Piemonte, a portion of the proceeds go to charity. Each of the producers call the wine L’Insieme, but are free to have their own “blend”.  To date, near a million Euro have been the result.  The winemakers participating are Mauro Veglio, Silvio Grasso, Corino, Elio Altare (La Morra), Gianfranco Alessandria from Monforte d’Alba, Ca’Viola from Dogliani, and Morando.

Elio Altare’s L’Insieme is made up of Cabernet Sauvignon 40%, Barbera 20%, Nebbiolo 20%, Dolcetto 10%, Syrah 5%, Petit Verdot 5%.  He makes around 3000 bottles from vines 10 to 30 years old. The wine is aged in French barriques for 18 months.

Spices, herbs, mineral notes, and tons of fruit. Round, juicy and long. A wine that tastes different with every sip. Structure and what happens in the glass, suggest that this will just get better with age.  Whether you drink it now or cellar it, just buy it – it’s for a good cause.
